What to Dress Your Baby In (and How to Carry Them) for a Photoshoot
Parents almost always over-pack for a baby's first photoshoot. In reality, simpler is better, both for how the photos turn out and for how comfortable your baby stays through the session.
WHAT TO DRESS BABY IN
Soft, simple pieces over fussy outfits, since a plain bodysuit or knit romper photographs better than anything with buttons or embellishment. Skip tight elastic right before the shoot, since socks and mittens leave marks that take time to fade. One hero outfit is usually enough, since too many changes tire a baby out fast. Breathable fabric only, avoiding synthetic or scratchy material. Dress warm for travel and undress once settled in the studio.
HOW TO CARRY YOUR BABY TO AND THROUGH THE SESSION
Support the head and neck fully at all times for babies under 4 months. Use a gentle, upright hold for settling between shots rather than laying baby flat repeatedly. Let the photography team guide positioning for each shot rather than guessing. Keep transitions slow, since quick position changes are more likely to unsettle a baby.
A SIMPLE PACKING LIST
One to two soft outfits plus a spare in case of feeding mess, a light blanket for the car, a comfort item such as a pacifier or small toy, and feed supplies if not exclusively studio-fed. Most studios, including ours, maintain a wardrobe of properly sized gowns so you don't need to buy anything new.
