IS A NEWBORN PHOTOSHOOT HYGIENIC AND SAFE?

A newborn's immune system is still developing, so hygiene at a studio should be treated as a medical-grade requirement, not a nice-to-have.

Every prop, wrap and basket should be sanitised between sessions, not just cleaned when it looks dirty. Studio gowns and swaddles should be washed after every use. Room temperature should be held at 26 to 28 degrees Celsius, since newborns can't regulate body heat yet. Every photographer handling the baby should use a trained, safe posing technique rather than unsupported floating shots. Feeding and settling breaks should be built into the schedule, not rushed through.

WHAT SHOULD YOUR BABY WEAR, OR NOT WEAR?

Simple bodysuits or bare skin with a soft wrap almost always photograph better than a fussy outfit. One or two outfit looks are enough for family portraits, using soft knit rompers rather than anything with buttons or zips. Avoid tight elastic like socks and mittens right before the shoot, since marks take 15 to 20 minutes to fade. Let the studio's wardrobe do the heavy lifting, since a well-stocked studio will have soft, correctly sized options for a newborn. Dress baby warmly for the car ride, then undress once inside the temperature-controlled studio.

COMFORT OVER CUTENESS, ALWAYS

The best newborn photos come from a comfortable, sleepy baby, not a styled one. That means feeding on demand even if it pauses the session, using only soft breathable fabrics, and booking within the 30 to 45 day mark when babies are still curled, sleepy and easiest to pose safely.
